DUBAI: Iran dismissed US President Joe Biden’s backing for nationwide protests over the murder of a woman in police custody on Sunday as interference in Tehran’s domestic affairs.

In response to weeks of anti-government rallies in Iran sparked by Mahsa Amini’s death on Sept. 16, Biden stated on Saturday that he was impressed by the bravery of Iranians taking to the streets in protest.

“On Saturday, Biden intervened in Iranian domestic affairs by backing the unrest… “In recent days, the US administration has urgently tried to incite unrest in Iran under various pretexts,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said, according to ISNA.

Protests around the country have posed one of the most significant challenges to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution, with some people calling for the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
