The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Friday that forecasts for October-December show a high likelihood of drier-than-average conditions in the Horn of Africa, as the worst drought in more than 40 years appears to be continuing.

“Unfortunately, our models indicate that we are about to enter the fifth consecutive failed rainy season in the Horn of Africa,” said Guleid Artan, Director of the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC), the World Meteorological Organization’s regional climate center for East Africa.

“We are on the verge of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia,” he added.
