Greek PM wants to keep channels with Turkey open despite “unacceptable” comments

ATHENS – Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Sunday that Athens would try to keep communication channels open with Ankara despite Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s recent “unacceptable” comments.

Erdogan accused Greece of occupying demilitarized islands in the Aegean Sea, adding that Turkey was prepared to “do whatever is required” if the need arose.

“I find the Turkish president’s recent words deplorable,” Mitsotakis said during a news conference in the northern city of Thessaloniki.

“However,” he continued, “we will always attempt to maintain communication lines open,” adding that he has always been willing to meet Erdogan.
